For hundreds of years, poker was a game dominated by male players. Female players were not even welcome in most poker games.

But this has been changing in the recent years. More and more women are playing poker both casually and for money. Players like Annie Duke, Evelyn Ng, Isabelle Mercier, Cyndy Violette and Jennifer Harman when combined with television personalities such as Shana Hiatt, Mimi Rogers and Jennifer Tilly have put women in the forefront of the current poker scene.

The professional players listed above; in particular Annie Duke and Jennifer Harman, compete in the same ring games, cash games and tournaments as their male counterparts, and are quite successful as well. Thanks to the expanding television coverage and the dismissal of the outdated beliefs that poker can’t be played by women, we are seeing not only greater numbers of poker players, but greater numbers of female poker players as well.

Female, movie and television personalities are becoming more active in poker. Jennifer Tilly won her first World Series Of Poker bracelet in 2005 and Mimi Rogers has been on television playing poker numerous times. Women around the world are seeing these personalities and the professional players listed above and deciding to join the fun at the poker tables. In my opinion, it is about time.

Shana Hiatt, the beautiful spokesperson for the first three seasons of the World Poker Tour, helped transform the old school thinking that only men were interested in and talked about poker. The broadcasts of the World Series Of Poker always had men interviewing and talking about male poker players, but the public was introduced to a woman talking to poker players and about poker players. Courtney Friel replaced Shana for the fourth season, to continue to offer a female presence on the most popular weekly poker programming.
